UPDATED: Slick conditions lead to multiple crashes, two killed

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The wintry mix of snow and freezing rain the area got this morning led to multiple crashes, including one in Fort Wayne that proved to be fatal.

Police were called to the 5500 block of Bell Tower Lane at about 7am after someone noticed an overturned vehicle in their back yard.

Apparently, the crash happened overnight when the driver was westbound on East State Blvd. when the vehicle lost control, went down an embankment, and hit a row of trees. There’s no word on how long the victim, identified as 33-year-old Jess Edward Voirol of Fort Wayne, was there before police were notified, but he was pronounced dead by medics and Fort Wayne Fire Department personnel.

Another crash near the intersection of Stellhorn and Reed Roads that involved multiple vehicles left one woman dead. 61-year-old Lana Schieferstein was pronounced dead at around 8:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Fort Wayne and Allen County now have seven reported traffic fatalities for 2019.
