Teen Found Dead in Pond Near SE Indiana Home

SUNMAN, Ind. (AP): Authorities say a teenager was found dead after apparently going for a swim in a pond near his family's southeastern Indiana home.

Indiana Conservation Officers say the parents of 19-year-old Thomas Herring noticed him missing Wednesday from their home near the Ripley County town of Sunman. They searched a wooded area behind their home before Herring's father found his clothing beside a neighbor's pond.

Divers found the teen's body in about 8 feet of water about 10 yards from a fishing pier on the pond Wednesday evening, about five hours after the search began for him.

Conservation Officer Angela Goldman says Herring wasn't a strong swimmer and it wasn't known why he entered the pond.
