STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO) – A 17-year-old Steuben County girl was killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning at a rural intersection near Orland.
Steuben County Sheriff’s deputies and emergency responders were called around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday to the intersection of State Road 327 and County Road 350 North in Jackson Township after a report of a serious crash involving two vehicles.
When first responders arrived, they found an unresponsive female trapped inside one of the vehicles. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts by Orland Fire Rescue and Steuben County EMS, the victim, identified as 17-year-old Febie Booher of rural Orland, died at the scene.
Investigators say Booher was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu and was stopped at the intersection on County Road 350 North. A preliminary investigation indicates she entered the intersection and pulled into the path of a northbound 2011 Ford F-150 driven by 36-year-old Jessica Gaetz of rural Orland.
Authorities say Gaetz braked and swerved in an attempt to avoid the collision but was unable to do so. The pickup struck the driver’s side of Booher’s vehicle.
Gaetz was taken to Cameron Hospital with minor injuries, including a possible broken wrist.
Investigators say Booher was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Gaetz was wearing a seatbelt, and airbags deployed in both vehicles.
The Steuben County FACT crash investigation team assisted at the scene. Officials say weather and road conditions were not factors, and alcohol is not believed to have contributed to the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
