Unclaimed Remains of 3 Vets Inurned at Marion

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The remains of three veterans from as far back as the Civil War have been inurned at Marion National Cemetery.

After a ceremony at Veteran's Park in Zionsville celebrating the lives of Civil War Army Private Hiram Maine, World War I Army Private Forest Smith and World War II Army Cpl. Leo Valdez Jr., American Legion Riders and other motorcyclists escorted the remains to the cemetery in northeastern Indiana on Saturday.

The Indianapolis Star and WISH-TV report a nonprofit veterans group called the Missing in America Project found and recovered the cremains from the storage vaults of Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers in Indianapolis.

Each of the veterans died years after their military service but were not claimed by relatives.
