SUMMITTVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Central Indiana police are investigating the gruesome discovery of up to 100 dead animals in a barn where surviving animals are described as “walking skeletons.”
 
  Madison County deputies were called Tuesday evening to the barn, where they found the carcasses of between 75 and 100 animals piled atop each other in the rural building.
 
  Sheriff Ron Richardson tells The Herald Bulletin he wonders why the couple who owns the property didn’t ask for help if they couldn’t care for the animals.
 
  He says the disturbing scene may have gone unnoticed because of cold weather and recent warm temperatures likely spread the stench of the carcasses beyond the property.
 
  Animal Protection League director Maleah Stringer tells The Indianapolis Star several surviving but malnourished animals found at the barn resemble “walking skeletons.”
