The Lead Off

  • The Allen County Board of Zoning Appeals voted Tuesday to deny a special-use request tied to a proposed quarry on the county’s southwest side.
  • More than 1,000 people attended the public meeting at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Conference Center.
  • Additional proposals tied to rezoning requests before the Allen County Plan Commission were later withdrawn.

FORT WAYNE, IND. (WOWO) The Allen County Board of Zoning Appeals voted Tuesday night to reject a special-use proposal connected to a planned quarry and industrial park development in southwest Allen County following a public meeting that drew more than 1,000 attendees.

The proposal was submitted by US Aggregates, a subsidiary of the Heritage Group, for property located at 7907 Homestead Road. The request was one of several proposals connected to a larger development plan involving more than 800 acres between Homestead and Yohne roads.

Board denies special-use request

The Allen County Board of Zoning Appeals voted against granting the special-use variance during the meeting held at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Conference Center.

The proposed quarry site is located near Lafayette Meadows Elementary School, residential neighborhoods, and the new IU Health hospital currently under construction.

Residents and local officials had previously voiced concerns about the project, including questions involving traffic, environmental impacts, noise, and proximity to nearby homes and schools.

Additional proposals withdrawn

Shortly after the zoning board’s vote, two additional proposals connected to the project were withdrawn from consideration by the Allen County Plan Commission.

Those proposals involved rezoning requests for property near Ellison Road and Interstate 69.

The withdrawn requests represented separate components of the broader quarry and industrial park proposal being advanced by US Aggregates.

Public turnout reflects community interest

Tuesday’s meeting drew a large crowd, with more than 1,000 people attending the hearing.

Public opposition to the project had grown in recent months as neighborhood groups and community members organized informational meetings and public outreach efforts related to the proposed development.

Local and state officials had also publicly expressed opposition to the project ahead of the vote.

Company response and possible appeal

A representative for US Aggregates told 21Alive the company respects the board’s decision.

The representative also said the option to appeal the ruling remains available.

No timeline for a potential appeal was announced Tuesday night.

Next steps

With the special-use request denied and related rezoning proposals withdrawn, the future of the proposed quarry and industrial park remains uncertain.

Company officials have not publicly announced whether revised proposals will be submitted or whether an appeal of the zoning decision will move forward.

The Takeaway

Local zoning decision halts current proposal

The Allen County Board of Zoning Appeals’ vote represents a significant setback for the proposed southwest Allen County quarry and industrial park project, at least in its current form.

Community opposition played a visible role

The large public turnout and sustained neighborhood opposition highlighted widespread community interest surrounding the proposed development near residential areas, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Appeal process remains possible

Although the proposal was denied, US Aggregates indicated it may still pursue an appeal, leaving open the possibility of additional hearings or future revisions to the project.
