Veteran State Trooper Retiring

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A long-time Indiana State Police trooper is retiring.

Master Trooper Douglas Kelly, a 34-year veteran of the force, had served the Fort Wayne post, patrolling Allen, DeKalb and Steuben County in several stints since 1989.

In 2012, Kelly was awarded the Department’s Combat Action Award for his actions in May of 2009 when he pursued a stolen vehicle suspect who eventually exited the vehicle and ran on foot through a field.

Upon catching up to the man, Kelly attempted to take him into custody, even as the man struck him in the head with a rock and tried to take his gun from his holster. Kelly was able to make the arrest after suffering two broken fingers in the altercation.
