Videotape Captures School Being Damaged by Tornado

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – A northern Indiana school district superintendent says video from surveillance cameras activated when a tornado struck will help the district evaluate its security procedures.

Scott Hanback tells the Journal & Courier the Tippecanoe School Corp. did the same thing last year after seeing video of a tornado striking a school in Henryville in southeastern Indiana. Security cameras inside Tippecanoe's Southwestern Middle School on Nov. 17 caught images as an EF-2 tornado tore apart the gymnasium and several classrooms.

Footage from Mintonye Elementary School wasn't available because cameras didn't activate when the power went out.

Southwestern Principal Karen Smith says she was relieved students wouldn't have been in areas shown in the video. She says they would have been in interior rooms.

The tornado struck on a Sunday.
