INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ An Indiana War Memorial exhibit honors Indiana's only National Guard unit involved in combat action during the Vietnam War.
 
The exhibit opening Friday is dedicated to the Ranger D Company of 1st Infantry Regiment of Indiana.
 
In less than a year of combat operations, the Rangers of Company D accrued more than 500 individual awards. During its deployment, Company D conducted nearly 1,000 patrols. The company operated in five or six man teams that were inserted into enemy territory to ambush enemy forces, gather intelligence, direct artillery and airstrikes, and monitor enemy supply and communication lines. The unit suffered six casualties.
 
The permanent exhibit is free and will be open to the public during the War Memorial Museum's hours of operation: Wednesday-Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
