Woman Leads Police on Chase After Hit and Run

MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): A woman was taken into custody after leading police on a chase in Miami County. Thursday around 4:00 P.M., police say a car allegedly hit a truck on U.S. 31 near Fulton County Road 375 North. Police were notified after the car left the scene. About 10 minutes later, troopers found a car matching the suspect vehicle and tried to pull it over, but the driver, 35-year-old Monica Shirhall, of South Bend, led police on a 12-mile chase, reaching a top speed close to 90 mph. The chase ended when Shirhall hit two sets of stop sticks. After crashing into a guardrail, Shirhall got out of her vehicle and tried to run, but she was captured and taken to a hospital where police say she was admitted for allegedly having an extremely high blood alcohol concentration. She was also treated for a head injury. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in both alleged crashes.
