3-year-old Indianapolis Boy Fatally Shot in Head

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indianapolis police say a 3-year-old boy has died after being fatally shot in the head.

The shooting occurred Saturday evening on the city's northeast side. Officer Christopher Wilburn says the child died about five hours later at Riley Hospital for Children.

It's not clear how the shooting occurred, but investigators believe the boy pulled the handgun off a countertop after it was left unattended. The boy's parents were home at the time.

<span style=”font-family: Arial; font-size: 18px;”>Wilburn calls the apparent accident “heart-wrenching,” given the age of the victim and the holiday season.

The boy's name was not immediately released.
