Suspect Arrested After High-Speed Chase, Foot Pursuit in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A driver is in custody after allegedly leading Fort Wayne police on a high-speed pursuit Wednesday afternoon before fleeing on foot and barricading himself in an attic.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, the incident began around 1:11 p.m. when an officer assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit observed a gray Toyota Avalon traveling southbound on Clinton Street near Oakdale Avenue at 58 mph in a 35 mph zone. Police said the vehicle was also making unsafe lane changes.

Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver allegedly refused to stop and fled, prompting a vehicle pursuit. Police said speeds during the chase reached nearly 90 mph.

During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle sideswiped another vehicle and continued fleeing without stopping, according to investigators.

The chase ended in the Villages of Hanna neighborhood, where police said the suspect abandoned the vehicle and ran into an apartment building. Officers said the suspect entered an apartment and jumped from a second-story window in an effort to evade capture.

Police later located the suspect south of the Villages of Hanna after he allegedly entered a residence through an unlocked front door. According to the department, the suspect then barricaded himself in the home’s attic.

Additional details regarding the suspect’s identity, possible charges and how the standoff ended were not immediately released. The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department.
