Woman, 58, Found Dead after Central Indiana Home Fire

SPICELAND, Ind. (AP) – A fire in a rural central Indiana community killed a 58-year-old woman and left her husband with burns over about 85 percent of his body.

Henry County Coroner Steve Hacker said the body of Rita Hollars of Spiceland was found near the front door of her home, leading officials to believe she was trying to escape the fire early Thursday that also killed the family dog.

Fifty-eight-year-old Eugene Hollars suffered burns trying to rescue his wife before neighbors stopped him. He was being treated at a hospital in Indianapolis, 30 miles west of Spiceland.

Spiceland Fire Chief Scott Teague tells The Star Press that when fire crews first arrived, flames were shooting through the roof of the home.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately clear.
