INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The fight over Common Core continues in Indiana despite the state's decision to become the first in the U.S. to revoke the national math and English education benchmarks.

Governor Mike Pence signed legislation repealing those standards Monday. The state has until July 1st to replace them.

Critics say the Common Core was adopted without enough local input and urged lawmakers to axe it.

But education officials still are grappling with how much of the Common Core standards should be used in the new guidelines. The state must follow current law to maintain its waiver from federal education benchmarks.

Mixing the Common Core with similar Indiana standards previously in place also poses challenges for drafters because critics say they are proposing standards that aren't substantially different.
