Indianapolis Schools Ban Food Rewards For Students

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A new wellness guideline in one of Indiana's largest school districts bars teachers from rewarding student achievements with food.

WRTV-TV reports the policy approved by the Indianapolis Public Schools over the summer is designed to create a healthier environment for students.

It says instead of pizza parties, students might be rewarded with sports equipment for recess and board games to be brought out for parties.

Second-grade teacher Heidi VanDuzer says she'll now hand out crayons or jump ropes or will offer lunch with a teacher to recognize students.

Officials hope the change will get kids thinking less about food.
