Tainted Water at Census Bureau Raises Concerns

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Contaminated well water at a southern Indiana U.S. Census Bureau office is raising safety concerns among workers and environmental officials.

The level of a chemical used in dry cleaning and other industries spiked to 8 parts per billion in a July test of the Jeffersonville site. That's above the 5 ppb limit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists as the maximum allowed.

The level was 5.5 ppb in April.

The Courier-Journal reports that the Census Bureau has shut off its drinking fountains and ice machines, provided water dispensers and is posting quarterly water test results. It also has begun transitioning from well water to Indiana American Water Company supply lines.

State officials say there's “no immediate risk” from the contamination, but some of the 1,250 employees question that advice.
