Panel Backs Allowing Inland Moves for Riverboat Casinos

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): A legislative committee has endorsed a proposal to allow Indiana's riverboat casinos to move inland to nearby sites. It also would allow live dealers for table games at the state's two horse track casinos.

The House Public Policy committee voted 10-2 on Thursday in favor of the bill.

Supporters of the proposals say they are needed to help Indiana's casino industry as its struggles with growing competition from neighboring states.

Executives of southern Indiana's Rising Star casino told the committee they're worried about its viability with the possible loss of gamblers to the horse track casinos near Indianapolis.

Similar proposals have failed in the Legislature in recent years, and its advocates still must overcome potential opposition from Republican Gov. Mike Pence and legislators who are against any expansion of gambling.
