EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Firefighters worked for several hours to put out a blaze at a large vacant commercial building in Evansville where heavy flames shot dozens of feet from the roof into the nighttime sky.

The fire was reported about 2:15 a.m. Friday in a mostly residential neighborhood north of the city's downtown.

District fire chief Amy Smith tells WFIE-TV that arriving crews found flames coming from the roof of the brick building that covers about half a city block.

Firefighters used at least three ladder trucks to shoot water into the building. Smith says a wall collapse and burning debris damaged some nearby garages but the fire was otherwise contained to the building.

Officials tell the Evansville Courier & Press the building was last occupied several years ago. No injuries were reported.
