INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A report by the state inspector general's office shows there was ample evidence to support federal wire fraud charges against former Indiana schools Superintendent Tony Bennett for his use of state staff and resources during his 2012 re-election campaign.
A copy of the report viewed by The Associated Press found more than 100 instances of violations between Jan. 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2012. But Bennett was ultimately fined $5,000 in a settlement, and Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry declined to take up the case.
Bennett has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and declined comment Tuesday.
The 95-page report is a sharp contrast to the formal eight-page report released publicly in July. It determined Bennett could have avoided fines had he rewritten rules to allow for campaigning.
