4-year-old Boy Dies after Going into Pond in Monroe County

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say a 4-year-old boy died after going into a pond near the border of Monroe and Lawrence counties.

The (Bloomington) Herald Times (http://bit.ly/1OdYtln ) reports deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office responded Tuesday evening to a report of a missing child.

Capt. Ryan Davis says the boy's mother told deputies that he ran out of the house, chasing dogs into a wooded area, and that she couldn't find him after about 15 minutes of searching.

Davis says deputies, conservation officers and state troopers searched the property and eventually found the boy's boots near a pond. He says one deputy got into the water and found the boy in about five minutes.

First responders attempted to resuscitate the child after he was pulled from the pond.

He later died at a hospital.
