Indiana Agency OKs 3 Winners of Regional Cities Grants

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ An Indiana agency has approved to areas centered around South Bend, Fort Wayne and Evansville for $42 million Regional Cities grants.

The approval Tuesday by the Indiana Economic Development Corp. is subject to funding support by the General Assembly since legislation creating the grant program called for $84 million in funding, not the $126 million that the agency endorsed.

However, a tax amnesty period for Indiana businesses and individuals funding the grants has collected nearly $50 million above projections, or more than enough to pay for a third grant.

The grants are intended to pay for infrastructure or amenities that could help the regions attract businesses and people. Gov. Mike Pence has said the grants are intended to encourage metro regions to work together more.

Seven regions submitted bids.
