Fort Wayne Senator opposes Aqua Indiana rate hike

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A Fort Wayne lawmaker is not a fan of a recently proposed rate hike by Aqua Indiana.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long of Fort Wayne has sent a letter to the state Utility Regulatory Commission calling the 29.8% increase for Aboite township residents “excessive and inappropriate,” according to the Journal Gazette.

As we told you previously, the hike, which would affect 13,000 customers and be phased in over a two year period, would raise a typical customer’s sewage bill to almost $56, while customers using well water would pay almost $77.

The utility also wants to charge a one-time connection fee of $1,300 for new customers joining their system.

Long says Aqua Indiana should pay for a planned Aboite expansion using the profits it gets from its contract to treat Fort Wayne’s sewage.
