FWCS hopeful building referendum passes next month

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Voters in Fort Wayne will have to decide next month on a strangely worded ballot question that would help pay for improvements within the Fort Wayne Community School District.

The district says it needs $130-million for repairs and security improvements at 42 buildings, paid by a property tax referendum they’re asking voters to approve.

Our partners in news at 21Alive report a similar bill passed in 2012 and authorized $119-million in spending, and while the ballot language says the measure will increase the property tax rate, Superintendent Wendy Robinson says that’s inaccurate.

Robinson explains that projects at North Side High School will soon be paid off and as a result property tax rates should stay the same, regardless of the wording on the May 3rd ballot.
