HOWE, Ind. (WOWO): After an abrasive campaign, Todd Young defeated Marlin Stutzman in the U.S. Senate Republican primary.

Votes are still coming in, but the Associated Press called the race early for Todd Young as he led by a 2 to 1 margin. He used a campaign that wasn’t afraid to use the media to attack Marlin Stutzman over campaign finance spending.

Yet, as Andy Downs with the IPFW’s Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics tells WOWO News, you wouldn’t know Young had the statewide momentum. “How many commercials did we see up here? It’s almost as if Young said ‘let’s just give up on northeast Indiana’. Obviously, it seems to be working out well for him.”

Stutzman defeated Young in Allen County by about a 2 to 1 margin. In his concession speech, Stutzman blamed Young’s “outside spending” for his defeat.

Young now faces Baron Hill in November for retiring U.S. Senator Dan Coats’ seat. Hill ran unopposed in Tuesday night’s primary.
