FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO)- Indiana Congressman Jim Banks is doing his part to bring a national museum to the Summit City.

Banks introduced legislation, which would designate the main hangar at Smith Field in Fort Wayne as the National Airmail Museum. According to the Journal Gazette, the project would roughly cost $2.5 million to develop. Banks’ legislation says that no federal funds would be made available in the project development.

The United States Postal Service began airmail delivery in 1911, and in 1930, commercial airmail service came to Smith Field, which was previously known as Paul Baer Municipal Airport.

There is currently no national museum dedicated to airmail in the United States.
