INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The Indiana attorney general has filed a petition asking a state agency to suspend the license of a Gary funeral home director accused of hiding the remains of two babies in boxes above ceiling tiles during an inspection.
The Indiana Board of Funeral and Cemetery Service is scheduled to hear the petition against Benjamin Rawls of Dolton, Illinois, on Thursday. Attorney General Greg Zoeller is asking the board to suspend Rawls' license for 90 days while an investigation continues into what happened at Smith, Bizzell and Warner and Son Funeral Home in Gary.
A woman answering the telephone at Rawls' residence hung up when told The Associated Press was seeking comment.
The father of a baby who died in 1996 is suing former and current operators of the funeral home.
