ANDERSON, Ind. (AP): A central Indiana man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for shooting two people before being shot by police.
Madison Circuit Judge Angela Warner-Sims sentenced 40-year-old Atul Navalo of Anderson on Monday. He pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery and pointing a firearm in the shootings last July 3.
Navalo shot 51-year-old Howard McCoy and 30-year-old Daniel A. Dollar before being shot by Anderson police Officer Shad Grile.
McCoy and Dollar received non-life-threatening injuries.
Grile received the department’s Medal of Valor, Life Saving Award and Combat Cross for his actions in the incident.
Navalo declined to offer a statement at his sentencing hearing. The (Anderson) Herald Bulletin reports members of his family declined to comment after the hearing.
