Apartment Shooter’s Body Out of Military Cemetery

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP): A cemetery director says an Army veteran buried with military honors despite fatally shooting an Indianapolis apartment manager has been disinterred from a national burial ground in Michigan.

Fort Custer National Cemetery Director Roy Luera tells The Journal Gazette that the remains of Michael LaShawn Anderson were exhumed Wednesday by staff of the Augusta, Michigan cemetery and employees of a funeral home. Luera said information on where the remains were taken is not being released.

The death of Alicia Koehl during a May 2012 shooting spree at an Indianapolis apartment complex and subsequent burial of Anderson led Congress to pass legislation authored by Republican Senator Coats of Indiana that allows the Department of Veterans Affairs to disinter from national cemeteries the remains of veterans who committed capital crimes.
