Area attorney reacts to controversial Stanford rape sentence

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): It’s a criminal case that’s got everyone talking… a Stanford University student was convicted of rape last week, and sentenced to only six months in jail.

But prosecutors were asking for six years, and the backlash on social media has been severe, with many saying the sentence was too light.

Local defense attorney Michelle Kraus tells our Partners in News at 21Alive the judge took Brock Turner’s lack of criminal history into account. She also says people should respect the judge’s call, even if they don’t necessarily agree with it.

Turner could be released from jail in three months for “good behavior.” There’s now an effort underway in California to recall the judge.
