Attorneys Seek Competency Exam in Homicide Case

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Attorneys for a 20-year-old Fort Wayne man charged with killing a woman in a cemetery and setting her body on fire have requested mental health experts examine him to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

The Journal Gazette reports attorneys for Quinn Albers also want mental health experts to determine whether Albers was suffering from mental disease or defect at the time 30-year-old Katherine Gick was killed. His attorneys informed the court they intend to use a defense of mental disease or defect.

Gick’s death in October was ruled a homicide, with the exact cause still under investigation. An autopsy revealed she had suffered blunt-force trauma and sharp-force trauma to her body, which was found in an undeveloped area of Catholic Cemetery east of the city’s downtown.
