INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Three convenience store chains and a trade group are asking a federal judge to stop Indiana from enforcing a law barring them from selling cold beer.

The Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association on Thursday asked Judge Richard Young to keep the state from enforcing the law until they can prove he should throw it out altogether.

Attorney John Maley says that the law essentially contradicts itself. He says convenience stores can legally sell chilled wine and wine coolers with a higher alcohol content than beer. He also says that when the law is enforced, it depends on state excise police officers' sense of touch rather than a thermometer.

But state attorney Ken Joel says the convenience stores can't prove the 80-year-old law harms them in any way.
