DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO) – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a head on collision at the 7400 block of State Road 8.

The collision involved two vehicles, and it was later reported that the three occupants suffered from injuries.

It was determined that Austin Ortiz of Butler, Ind. was driving a teal 2007 Ford heading westbound when he crossed left of center into an eastbound lane. An eastbound red 2012 Chevy, driven by Eric Rice of Edgerton, Ohio veered into the westbound lane to avoid collision with Ortiz.

It is believed that Ortiz corrected back into the westbound lane just as Rice veered into the lane. The crash occurred in the westbound lane.

All occupants were wearing seat belts, and airbags were deployed in both vehicles.

Ortiz had to be extracted from the vehicle and airlifted to an area hospital. He was later listed in serious condition.

Rice and his passenger were transported to the hospital by EMS. Rice was later released. His passenger was listed in fair condition.
