Cumberland Makes Final Pitch to Save Historic Church

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A central Indiana community is making a final effort to save a century-old church from the wrecking ball.

The Indianapolis Star reports that Cumberland Town Manager Andrew Klinger has been talking with a development company about converting St. John's United Church of Christ into 60 senior housing units with first-floor retail.

Klinger says TWG Development responded to a request for information issued after the church announced plans to sell the building to Pittsburgh-based grocer Giant Eagle. The company plans to raze the church and build a gas station and convenience store.

Pastor Jimmy Watson says the church will honor its deal with Giant Eagle but that the town and developer can work out another agreement to save the building.

The dwindling congregation is building a smaller church elsewhere.
