BRISTOL, Ind. (AP): A Michigan-based auto parts company plans to cut about 500 jobs at its northern Indiana manufacturing plant.

The Elkhart Truth reports that an official with Diversified Machine in Bristol has notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development of layoffs due to begin next week.

Operations director Steve McKenzie says the job cuts are due to “the sudden and unforeseen cancellation” of a contract with the company’s largest customer, which he did not identify.

The Bristol operation is a division of automotive parts supplier Chassix.

More than half of the layoffs take effect Monday, with staggered departures planned throughout the summer. Ten employees will remain through October.
