Electrical Arcing in Cables Being Blamed for Underground Indy Blasts

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Electrical arcing in cables is being blamed for underground explosions that shot manhole covers into the air at a busy downtown Indianapolis intersection.

Indianapolis Power & Light officials said Thursday that the arcing caused short circuits and left the utility's infrastructure with “significant damage.''

No one was injured, but hundreds of customers remained without power at mid-day. Senior vice president of customer operations Joe Bentley said some outages would continue into the evening.

More than a dozen similar incidents have occurred over the last decade. The utility has replaced about a third of its downtown manhole covers with ones that lift only a few inches in cases of explosions.

City officials say they will work with the utility to ensure safety ahead of next month's men's Final Four basketball tournament.
