ELKHART, IND. (WOWO) The Elkhart Police Department is investigating an overnight shooting that left a sleeping two-year-old child in critical condition after gunfire struck a home early Tuesday morning.
Police say the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. June 23 in the 1000 block of W. Garfield Ave according to WNDU.
Child struck inside home during gunfire
According to investigators, the toddler was asleep inside the residence when bullets struck the home.
Elkhart Police said the child was first taken to Elkhart General Hospital before being flown to the IU Health Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis for further treatment.
Officials have not released additional details on the child’s condition beyond confirming critical injuries.
Investigation underway, no arrests made
Authorities said no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and work to determine what led to the gunfire at the residence.
