WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ State environmental officials are blaming equipment failure at a north-central Indiana sewage treatment plant for causing a fish kill along a Tippecanoe County stream.
 
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says a malfunctioning oxygen blower and a failed alarm system at the Carriage Estates treatment plant in West Lafayette released partially treated wastewater into Indian Creek.

That wastewater had high levels of ammonia and low levels of dissolved oxygen which killed fish downstream of the plant.
 
IDEM is urging residents to avoid contact with the creek downstream of the plant and to keep pets away from affected water.
 
The sewage treatment plant is operated by American Suburban Utilities. Owner Scott Lods tells the Journal & Courier the company is studying the events that led to the discharge.
