Fatal Evansville Fire May Have Been Set by Victim

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP): Firefighters investigating a deadly house fire in southwestern Indiana say the blaze may have been deliberately set by the man whose body was found in the home's ruins.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams said Friday investigators believe 54-year-old Thomas Neil Duncan may have set the early morning fire that claimed his life.

Williams tells the Evansville Courier & Press it's too early “to discuss how or why we have arrived at these suspicions.” He says the fire's cause and origin remain under investigation.

Williams says the first deputy at the scene found three people outside who said another relative could be inside. The deputy tried to enter the home, but was driven back by flames.

Duncan's body was found hours later.
