Federal charges for Gary man in 7-Eleven clerk slaying

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP): A Gary man is facing federal charges alleging he fatally shot a 7-Eleven store clerk during a robbery.

U.S. Attorney David Capp said at a news conference Thursday that 27-year-old Eric M. Dillon is charged with robbery, using a firearm during a crime of violence and causing death during a crime of violence.

Capp says Dillon entered a 7-Eleven store in Hammond about 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 20, demanded money, and shot and killed 60-year-old clerk Roger Unton of Blue Island, Illinois.

Capp says “this tragic act of violence will not be tolerated in our community.”

Capp says Dillon was arrested Monday during a traffic stop in Hammond. He had an initial court appearance Thursday and was assigned a public defender.
