Fort Wayne Estimates Cost of Flood-Related Damages

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Last week's flood-related damages have cost somewhere between $200,000 and $300,000, according to a preliminary estimate by the city of Fort Wayne.

Public Works Director Bob Kennedy told the Journal Gazette last week's flooding likely incurred an overall bill of several hundred thousand dollars, but it's still too early to give an official amount.

Emergency crews and public works employees have worked 12-hour days to clean up from last week's heavy rainfall that damaged homes, private property, and local farms.

Fort Wayne has hired contractors to build clay levees and fill some 70,000 sandbags that were placed along areas of high water throughout the city.

The Journal Gazette reports last week's flood was the second-highest on the St. Marys River, coming in behind the 2003 flood that damaged nearly 270 homes.
