Gary Mail Center Expected to Close Next Summer

GARY, Ind. (AP) – Postal Service officials are expecting to shut down the mail processing center in Gary by the end of next summer.

Postal Service spokeswoman Mary Dando says some of the mail processing for northwestern Indiana is already being done at a center in the Chicago suburb of Bedford Park.

Dando tells Lakeshore Public Radio that all of the Gary center's work is scheduled to be moved to the Illinois site by late July 2015. About 150 people work at the Gary processing center.

The Postal Service is planning to close several Indiana processing centers to save money. Those include centers in South Bend, Terre Haute, Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Bloomington and Columbus.
