INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A measure to block children under 16 from using tanning salons is one step closer to becoming law in Indiana.
House members approved the proposal 69-23 on Thursday. The Senate passed the bill last month 30-17.
The bill would throw out a current law requiring minors under 16 to have parental supervision at tanning salons.
The measure aims to cut exposure to the health hazards tanning poses to children. Opponents criticize it for taking away the decision from parents, and others say it does not go far enough by only banning use in tanning facilities.
The proposal also would require the State Department of Health to create standards regulating tanning bed use in Indiana.
The bill needs approval from Gov. Mike Pence before becoming law.
