Indiana’s 1st Female Justice Since 1999 is to Take Oath

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana’s newest Supreme Court justice is ready to take the oath of office to become only the state’s second woman justice.

Tippecanoe County Judge Loretta Rush is scheduled to take the oath of office Wednesday during a private ceremony administered by Chief Justice Brent Dickson. She’ll become Indiana’s first female Supreme Court justice since Myra Selby stepped down in 1999 after five years on the court. Selby was Indiana’s first woman justice.

A formal public swearing-in ceremony for Rush is planned for Dec. 28.

Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels picked Rush in September to replace Justice Frank Sullivan Jr., who stepped down in July after 19 years on the court.

Rush has been a juvenile court judge for 14 years.
