Indy Divers Rescue Woman Following Icy Plunge

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Authorities say Indianapolis divers have rescued a woman who they say jumped off a bridge into the frigid White River.

The Indianapolis Fire Department spokeswoman Lt. Bonnie Hensley says a passer-by saw the woman jumped from a bridge on the city's west side shortly before 10 a.m. Monday. By the time emergency personnel arrived, the woman was floating about 40 feet from a riverbank.

The river was covered with a thin sheet of ice. Hensley says one diver swam around the ice while another hacked through the ice to reach her.

Hensley estimated the water temperature at 40 degrees.

The woman was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital for treatment of hypothermia. Hensley says she was conscious and listed in serious condition.
