IU Official Heading to Ukraine as Election Monitor

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP): An Indiana University administrator will be heading to Ukraine to serve as an election monitor for that country's upcoming presidential vote.

Kathy Parkison is the interim vice chancellor for academic affairs at Indiana University Kokomo. She is to travel with a U.S. Department of State group to document voting in the eastern European country that has faced violent unrest for months.

Parkison will be in Ukraine May 19-25. The Kokomo Tribune reports she and election observers from other countries will watch polling sites for signs of voter intimidation and fraud.

Parkison says the volunteer work helps her show a commitment to the democratic process. She has previously observed elections in Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Macedonia and Moldova.
