Komets’ Season Ends in Overtime Heartbreaker Against Kansas City

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (WOWO): The Fort Wayne Komets’ playoff run came to an end Tuesday night after an incredible late-game comeback fell just short in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Kansas City Mavericks in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final.

Facing elimination, the Komets found themselves trailing 3-0 with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation. Fort Wayne responded with three unanswered goals, capped by a dramatic game-tying slap shot from William Dufour with just six seconds left on the clock.

The comeback forced overtime, but Kansas City quickly answered. Jakov Novak scored the game-winner 1:06 into the extra period, sending the Mavericks to the Kelly Cup Final with a 4-2 series victory.

Kansas City will now face the Florida Everblades in the ECHL championship series.

The loss brings the Komets’ season to a close after a postseason run that included a Central Division title and a trip to the Western Conference Final.

Fans will have one final opportunity to celebrate the team when the Komets hold their annual jersey auction Friday, June 5, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Expo Center. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.
