Lafayette School Destroyed by Tornado Plants New Garden

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – A Lafayette elementary school that was struck by a tornado in 2013 is building a community garden where children can grow vegetables and flowers.

The Lafayette Journal and Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/1FN2W8T ) Mintonye Elementary School is almost entirely recovered from the storm except for its butterfly garden. The school had the butterfly garden for more than a decade when a tornado destroyed the school Nov. 17, 2013.

This spring the school is replacing that butterfly garden with a community garden. Classes started planting seeds in April and last week the students took the seedlings outside and planted them.

Students and their families will care for the gardens over the summer.
