INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The state has agreed to delay a decision on whether to temporarily suspend the license of a former Gary funeral home director accused of hiding the bodies of two babies during an inspection.
The Board of Funeral and Cemetery Service agreed Thursday to grant Benjamin Rawls of Dolton, Illinois, a continuance so he can hire an attorney. The board was scheduled to decide whether to suspend Rawls' license for three months while the attorney general's office investigates.
The attorney general had filed a petition accusing Rawls of hiding the babies' remains from state inspectors in the business' ceiling. The petition says another worker learned the remains had been placed in the ceiling after the inspection.
The Lake County Coroner's Office retrieved the remains from the funeral home in early March.
