Man Arrested In Death Of His Infant Daughter

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ An Indianapolis man faces preliminary murder and neglect charges stemming from his 3-month-old daughter's death from traumatic head and leg injuries.

Twenty-three-year-old Christopher Schafer was arrested Wednesday after an autopsy showed his daughter died from blunt-force trauma injuries and her death was ruled a homicide.

The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/1uBDs6z) Schafer told police he fell asleep with Giuliana Grace on his chest and awoke to find her pinned between him and the couch and not breathing.

Police called to the scene found the child unresponsive. She was taken in critical condition to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Schafer was being held at the Marion County Jail on preliminary charges of murder, neglect and battery resulting in death.

Prosecutors will determine if he'll face formal charges in his daughter's death.
