Man Faces Attempted Murder Charge After Shootout With Deputy

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indianapolis police have charged a man wounded in a shootout with an off-duty sheriff's deputy with attempted murder.

Police said Tuesday that 33-year-old Dennis Green faces a preliminary charge of attempted murder. He remains in police custody at an Indianapolis hospital where he was taken in critical condition.

Sgt. Kendale Adams says the shootout occurred Monday afternoon after a Marion County sheriff's deputy witnessed an altercation on a street and followed a vehicle leaving the scene. He says the deputy approached the suspect and the two exchanged gunfire. Green was shot at least once, but the officer wasn't injured.

Two other suspects also were arrested. Police say another man who went to a hospital with a gunshot wound around the same time also may have been involved.
